Senior Software Engineer ; Vertical Search for Japanese market

Are you a self-motivated software engineer fluent in Japanese? The Yahoo! Search team is seeking an a senior software engineer to drive our vertical search efforts for the Japanese market. Yahoo! Search is passionate about building the best search platform on the planet. Yahoo! is not only one of the most popular sites for web search, but also the provider of many vertical search products, such as multimedia search and news search. As a senior member of the search team for Japanese market, you will drive our efforts for providing Japanese support in our vertical search products. You will work closely with product managers and teams from Yahoo! Japan to define the product requirements. You will take ownership of projects, collaborate effectively with other engineers in Sunnyvale and Japan, and drive the projects to completion.
Essential Responsibilities
Collaborate effectively with product managers and Yahoo! Japan teams to develop the vertical search requirements and product roadmap for the Japanese market. Help recruit strong engineers and help them come up to speed quickly. Master the core search technology and work closely with the core engineering teams to implement support for the Japanese language and other requirements for the Japanese market. Lead the lifecycle of product development, from requirements, design, implementation, testing, to deployment. Build strong working relationship and trust with other engineering teams and product management through on-time delivery, high quality, continuous innovation, and meeting expectations. Provide timely sustaining engineering support for high profile customer problems. Provide strong support to Yahoo! Japan engineering teams working on search products.
Required Knowledge
? Strong Experience in C or C++, and UNIX development tools.
? Minimum three years of industrial experience building complex software products.
? BS in Computer Science or equivalent. MS or PhD preferred.
? Fluency in Japanese.
? Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with teams in both the U.S. and Japan.
? Experience with Perl or another scripting language.
? Experience in team leadership preferred.
? Experience in search engine or information retrieval preferred.
? Experience in Japanese encoding and Japanese language process preferred.

Are you fluent in Japanese? The Yahoo! Search Technology – Japanese search team is seeking an experienced and results-oriented senior engineer to drive our global search efforts. Yahoo! Web Search is passionate about building the best search platform on the planet, and we do more than 100 million searches every day. As senior engineer in Japanese search team, you will take ownership of assigned projects and be responsible for analyzing problems, designing features, and driving those projects to completion. Your projects will involve changes in core components of the search engine such as crawling, indexing or ranking, requiring you to work closely with other Yahoo Search engineering teams as well as engineers from Yahoo! Japan.
Essential Responsibilities
Work independently as well as effectively collaborate with engineers from other development teams in US and Japan to design and implement new features and enhance existing ones in order to improve our web search engine and the user experience for users in Japan. Oversee assigned projects and drive to completion. Uncover and track down the root causes of observed issues. Optimize and automate solutions to be applied to all international regions. Analyze tests reports, logs and other data to identify new opportunities for improvement. Be an advocate for internationalization as new features or systems are designed. Have a solid understanding of the general web search technology, and be aware of the issues and opportunities that are unique to Japanese language and market.
Required Knowledge

Description
Product Manager Int’l Search
You will be a driving force behind the globalization of Yahoo! Search. In the role of International Product Manager you will help define our international strategy and execute against meeting our ambitious global financial and operational objectives. You will work closely with team members in Japan to perform competitive analyses, identify local consumer requirements, and lead product planning and development. As part of the US-based product team you will be the key individual responsible for the success of our international operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Monitor competitive research and develop accurate understanding of competitive landscape, emerging market trends and customer preferences
* Develop a comprehensive international strategic framework and drive international budgeting and forecasting efforts
* Formulate business cases for new country launches and major platform upgrades
* Lead the international product planning process and maintain on ongoing international product roadmap in close cooperation with each in-country team
* Coordinate international product releases thereby ensuring on-time and on-budget launches
* Define, track and report on key international financial and product usage success metrics
* Serve as a primary point of contact for international Search product managers
* Refine two-way sharing of information and best practices between in-country and US-based teams
REQUIREMENTS:
* Demonstrated leadership ability in an international matrix environment
* Excellent strategic analysis skills combined with strong business acumen
* Outstanding team player and relationship builder with the ability to coordinate people and activities across multiple functional areas and global locations
* Ability to prioritize among competing opportunities, balance consumer needs with business priorities, and articulate the rationale behind decisions
* Demonstrated strong capabilities in communicating and presenting at all levels of the organization
* Extensive experience with direct marketing in an environment with a strong customer focus
* General management experience a plus
* Medium level of travel involved (Up to 20%)
* Fluency (verbal, reading, writing) in Japanese required.
* BA/BS in Computer Science required. MBA highly desirable.
